Level 10 - The Catechism of the Catholic Church

Week Eight – Human Sexuality
The Church’s theory on Human Sexuality is derived from the 6th Commandment – You shall not commit adultery.
Sexuality – Defined as that affecting all aspects of the human person in the unity of his body and soul. It especially concerns affectivity, the ability of a person to love and procreate. In more general terms, it is the aptitude for forming bonds of communion with others.
The Vocation to Chastity
- Chastity is the successful integration of sexuality within the person and thus
the inner unity of man and his bodily and spiritual being. In other words, the commitment
to remain faithful to your wife (or to God).
The Integrity of the Person
- The chaste person maintains the integrity of the powers of life and love placed in him/her.
- Chastity is where one must master the passions and find peace or he/she will be governed by his or her desires.
- The virtue of chastity comes under the cardinal virtue of temperance, which is defined as seeking to permeate (make sense of, get over) the passions and appetites of the senses with reason.
- It is a long process, one that is never over.
- It is a cultural effort (discuss?)
The integrality of the gift of self
- Charity is the form of all the virtues (recall from last weeks topics on sin).
- Chastity is the gift of the person, the self; because he who practices it becomes a witness of God’s fidelity and loving kindness.
- The virtue of chastity blossoms in friendship (which is the expression of chastity).
The various forms of Chastity
- All the baptized are called to chastity.
- People should cultivate chastity in the way suited to their loves (some married, some religious, etc).
Offences against Chastity
- Lust, which is an unnatural sexual desire
- Fornication, which is sexual intercourse before marriage.
- Pornography - Masturbation
- Prostitution - Rape
Chastity and Homosexuality
- Acts of sexual union outside of marriage is wrong, and since marriage is defined as between man and wife, homosexual acts are wrong. However, people with such tendencies are not to be castigated (like any other sinner) they are to be helped. They are called to chastity.
Love of Husband and Wife – The twofold completion of marriage (love and procreation)
Fecundity of Marriage – The Church’s teachings on birth control are to abstain from chemical and physical barriers.
Offences to the Dignity of Marriage
- Adultery
- Divorce: Divorce is the legal ending of marriage, it does not exist in the church. Instead, the church accepts that some married couples may wish to be separated.
- Polygamy – many wives (husbands)
- Incest
